Australian Citizenship Test
What is the format of the Australian citizenship test?
Quick answer
The Australian citizenship test is 20 multiple-choice questions completed in 45 minutes. It is taken on a computer at a Department of Home Affairs office. Questions are based on the official booklet and you get your result on the day.
Computer-based, multiple choice
You sit at a computer and answer 20 multiple-choice questions. Each question presents a statement or question with several answer options. The test is taken at a Department of Home Affairs office as part of your citizenship interview appointment.
Based on the official handbook
Every question is drawn from "Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond", covering four chapters: Australia and its people, democratic beliefs and rights, government and the law, and Australian values. The values chapter has a special rule — all values questions must be answered correctly in addition to the 75% overall pass mark.
Same-day result
You receive your test result on the same day. If you pass the test and the interview is successful, you will be invited to attend an Australian citizenship ceremony where you make the Australian Citizenship Pledge.
