Australian Citizenship Test

How many questions are on the Australian citizenship test?

Quick answer

The Australian citizenship test has 20 multiple-choice questions. You have 45 minutes to complete them, and you must answer at least 75% correctly AND get all Australian-values questions right to pass.

The 20-question format

Every candidate answers 20 multiple-choice questions drawn from the official handbook "Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond". Questions cover all four chapters — Australia and its people, democratic beliefs, government and the law, and Australian values — so you can be tested on any topic in the booklet.

The special values rule

The citizenship test has a unique requirement beyond the 75% pass mark: all Australian-values questions must be answered correctly. This means that even a strong overall score is not enough if you miss any of the values questions. Targeted practice on Chapter 4 removes this risk.

How to prepare for any 20

Because the 20 questions are drawn from the full bank, the only reliable preparation is to cover the whole handbook across all four chapters. Timed mock tests that mirror the real 20-question, 45-minute format are the fastest way to find your weak spots and fix them before the day.
