The Australian Citizenship Pledge
- ◆ The pledge is made aloud at a citizenship ceremony.
- ◆ It pledges loyalty to Australia and its people.
- ◆ It promises to respect Australia's democratic beliefs, rights and liberties.
- ◆ It promises to uphold and obey the laws of Australia.
Mutual respect and tolerance
- ◆ Australians value mutual respect and tolerance of others.
- ◆ Compassion for those in need is part of the Australian way of life.
- ◆ Diversity is respected within a framework of shared values.
- ◆ Everyone is free to follow their beliefs while respecting the rights of others.
The "fair go" and mateship
- ◆ A "fair go" means everyone deserves an equal chance to get ahead.
- ◆ Success should come from a person's effort, not their wealth or background.
- ◆ Mateship means supporting and looking out for one another.
- ◆ These ideas reflect the value Australians place on fairness.
Equality of men and women
- ◆ Men and women have equal rights in Australia.
- ◆ Both have the same opportunities in education, work and public life.
- ◆ Discrimination on the basis of sex is against the law.
- ◆ Equality of opportunity is a shared Australian value.
Freedom of religion in Australia
- ◆ You are free to follow any religion, or no religion.
- ◆ Government in Australia is secular and treats all faiths equally.
- ◆ Religious laws have no legal status in Australia.
- ◆ Religious practice must operate within the laws of Australia.
Commitment to Australia and its future
- ◆ Citizens share a commitment to Australia and its future.
- ◆ They support Australia's parliamentary democracy.
- ◆ They support the rule of law and the equal treatment of all.
- ◆ This commitment is affirmed in the Australian Citizenship Pledge.
English: Australia's national language
- ◆ English is the national language of Australia.
- ◆ A common language helps people work, study and join in community life.
- ◆ English unites Australians from many different backgrounds.
- ◆ Australians are free to speak other languages as well.
Peaceful resolution of differences
- ◆ Differences are resolved through discussion, debate and voting.
- ◆ Australians reject violence as a means of political change.
- ◆ Governments are changed peacefully through elections.
- ◆ Working within the law and the democratic process is a shared value.
The Australian citizenship test explained
- ◆ The test has 20 multiple-choice questions in English.
- ◆ You need to answer at least 75% (15 of 20) correctly to pass.
- ◆ You must answer ALL Australian-values questions correctly, regardless of the overall score.
