Before Federation in 1901, how many separate British colonies existed in Australia?

Prior to Federation, Australia was made up of six separate, self-governing British colonies: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. On 1 January 1901 they united into a federation of states called the Commonwealth of Australia.
